Still in Search of Educational Equality: Current Challenges and Future Prospects
The term educational equity describes the equal participation of children and young people in educational opportunities, regardless of their individual and family characteristics. Contrary to the efforts of many countries to create the most educationally equitable conditions possible for adolescents, empirical studies repeatedly show a close correlation between individual and family background characteristics and educational success. This correlation is particularly close in Germany and has become even stronger during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, education systems have to deal with intended developments such as inclusion and digitalization as well as unintended crises such as flight and migration. The shortage of educators is leading to multi-professional teams – but in a different way than educational research recommends. How can educational justice be achieved in the face of these changes?
The lecture will explore the challenges outlined in more detail. Building on this, theses for the further development of learning structures and learning processes will be presented for discussion.
